Chapter 6

So how do I look?” Mom asked Becka for the twentieth time.

“You look great.”

“You sure?”

“Trust me.”

Becka wiped down the kitchen counter while Mom loaded stray cups and dishes into the dishwasher. Scott was out with Darryl, tracking down Z, and that was just fine with Becka and Mom. They were about to receive a guest — a guest they both knew Scott wasn’t crazy about. Maxwell Hunter had just finished another lecture and would be arriving any minute to pick up Mom for a late-night dinner.

“What if we don’t have anything to talk about?” Mom asked as she poured the soap into the dishwasher and closed it.

“Ask him about himself — guys always like that.”

“How do you know?”

“That’s what you always told me!” Becka laughed.

“Oh, right,” Mom chuckled. “That’s how I caught your father.” Suddenly she turned to Becka. “You don’t think I’m betraying him, do you — your father, I mean?” The question brought Becka up short. Not because she hadn’t thought of it, but because ever since she learned Maxwell had called, it was all she had thought of. Becka missed her father.

Desperately. People had said the pain would go away, but they were wrong. It had been six months since his plane had crashed in the deep jungles of Brazil, but sometimes it felt like six minutes. The ache would never leave. She knew it.

But she knew something else too. She knew Mom could not go on living life alone. Oh sure, she was a strong lady and could make it on her own — with God’s help, of course. She’d been doing just that for a lot of months now. But Becka could see how much Mom missed the sharing, the support, the closeness she and Dad had always had. Mom needed someone she could love — and someone who would love her — the way she and Dad had loved each other. And as much as it hurt Becka to think of another man married to her mother, she was pretty sure someday it would happen.

“I think it’s great!” she lied. “I’m sure Daddy would think so too.”

Mom searched Becka’s eyes, grateful for the words but somehow sensing the lie.

The doorbell rang.

“It’s him!” Another wave of panic hit Mom, which of course led to more dress smoothing and hair adjusting.

Becka grabbed the coat on the chair and slipped it over Mom’s shoulders. “You look great. Stop worrying.” She turned her mother toward the door and gave a little push. “Go.” With the added momentum, Mom headed for the entrance hall. She checked herself in the mirror one last time, then opened the door.

Maxwell stood on the porch. He wore a gold turtleneck sweater under a tweed sport coat. In his hands were a dozen roses. “Hello, Mrs. Williams.”

Mom stood speechless.

Becka waited for her to say something, but nothing was coming from Mom’s mouth. Finally the word hi squeaked out — a little too loud, a little too hoarse.

Becka winced. Suddenly she understood where her own clumsiness with boys came from.
